INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION
• Physical education helps in development of – physical, psychological & sociological aspects.
• Develops qualities like - cooperation, sympathy, patience, helpfulness, respect etc.
• These are sociological qualities which help us to adjust well in the society.
• Sociology is the scientific study of the society.
SPORTS, CULTURE AND CULTURAL HERITAGE
• Culture involves values, ideas and patterns.
• Various ethical values are developed in sports.
• Cultural heritage is the transfer of values, traditions and conventions of the past to the present and from present to future with some modifications.
• In the past man used activities like running, jumping, throwing arrow heads and spears to escape from danger or for hunting.
• In the past there were no set rules, but today each and every game or sport has its own rules and regulations.
• Training was given to youth only with the intention of developing physical fitness.
SPORTS AND GAMES - A PART OF CULTURE
CONTRIBUTION OF DIFFERENT COUNTRIES TOWARDS SPORTS AND GAMES
GREECE
• Greece contributed a lot towards sports and games.
• Greece was divided into Athens and Sparta.
• There were regular conflicts between these two states.
• Games were organised only to produce brave soldiers and warriors.
• In 776 BC the first Olympic Games were held in Olympia.
• 400 yard walking, 3 miles running, pentathlon (five games), boxing, wrestling, horse race, chariot race and many more games were included.
• In 394 AD Theodosius, the King of Rome stopped the organisation of Olympic Games.
• It took almost 1,503 years for Olympics to return back.
• The first modern Olympics were held in Athens, in Greece, in 1896 because of a French man named Baron Pierre De Coubertin.
• When Olympic Games are held Greece leads the opening March past and Olympic torch is also lighted at Olympia, Greece and is carried to the venue of Olympic Games.
